How Do I Become a Big Fish ?  We have just completed the first Open Meets of the season at both Macclesfield North Midlands Championships and Nottingham Nova Centurion Long Course 50 metre event. There has been some very good performances lots of personal best swims over 80 % and  70 medals from the two Meets details of individual achievements will be on Website shortly  - Well done !!!. The Nova Meet was where there were a lot of Big Fish and our older swimmers need to be asking how do I become a Big Fish?  I am constantly being told by swimmers and parents that they want to achieve certain qualifying times for either Counties, Regionals  or National Championships. There are no magical answers in coaching but by following the guidelines below in order of importance you will give yourself the opportunity to reach your full potential. 1) Attendance on a regular basis is the biggest factor for the improvement of swimmers especially 13 years and above. Academy Squad Swimmers  wanting to be a Big Fish should be looking to attend minimum equivalent hours per week to their age i.e. 14 year old girl 14 hours per week plus their own land training programme as they get older working on core strength. 2) Application a Big Fish should  always be ready to start the session on time do the programme at the right intensity and working on improving their technique by doing drills and under water skills in the Warm Ups and Swim Downs. Work at the right intensity in the Main Set not go through the motions or be continually giving themselves a break on the Main Set for whatever reason when it gets hard.  A Big Fish makes sure they eat properly and drink fluids especially when training also get enough rest by going to bed early prior to morning sessions. 3) Attitude a Big Fish always make sure they have prepared properly in advance for Open Meets this gives them the confidence and belief that they will perform very well on the day. A Big Fish will always relish the challenge of competition do a structured long Warm Up make sure they stretch prior to their event. Have a race plan in their mind and discuss with their Coach prior to race and outcome after finish. A Big Fish is not happy when they do not swim well but will always bounce back even more determined to put things right by working even harder in training and challenging themselves. 4) Ability a Big Fish always has ability and I have seen a lot of them over the years. However If you stop doing the first three things above it will not matter how much ability you have you will not stay a Big Fish for very long.        Everyone in The Academy Squad at this Club has ability in abundance and if you become a Big Fish you will decide how far you want to go not Darren, Andrew or myself we will provide the programme and coaching to help you but ultimately swimmers make swimmers.   Thanks Peter 25/10/17
